US Department of Energy on the roll in transforming scrap aluminum into new vehicle parts
May 26, 2023 | Metallurgical Lab
In collaboration with a mobility technology company Magna, the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is working on a manufacturing process that seeks to reduce 50% of energy consumption and 90% of carbon dioxide emissions used for collecting and transforming scrap aluminum into new vehicle parts.
The created patent called Shear Assisted Processing and Extrrusion (ShAPE) will collect scrap bits and leftover aluminum trims from uatomotive manufacturing and convert them directly into suitable material for new car parts. Additional efforts are being made to scale the process in bringing lightweight aluminum parts for Electric Vehicles (EVs).
